Whispers Estate in Mitchell, Indiana, is a home that’s no stranger to spooky stories. It may look quite normal from the road, but Whispers has long been the source of local ghost stories.
Indiana lore says the historic home is now simply too haunted to live in. But rather than be left quiet and dark, Whispers Estate’s haunting reputation makes it one of the most popular places in town.
Ghost hunters come from far and wide to investigate the reports at Whispers. And, for many, one night is all they need for Whispers Estate to leave them screaming.

1894
The first records of Whispers Estate arise out of property records from 1894. It is believed the home was built that year, or shortly before. The stately home was originally built for Dr. George White and his wife, Sarah, though they only lived in the home for a short time. Around the turn of the 20th century, George and Sarah sold their central Indiana home to another doctor, John Gibbons, and his wife, Jessie.
1899
Taking ownership of the home in either 1899 or 1901, John and Jessie Gibbons quickly made the house their own. Along with putting down roots in the community, Dr. Gibbons made the home into an office for his practice. John and Jessie never had children of their own. But they often adopted orphans who helped fill the large estate’s many bedrooms. Though the busy house was not without tragedy. Several children purportedly died there in the early 1900s, along with a few of Dr. Gibbons’ patients.
2006
After the Gibbons family’s ownership, the large Indiana home went through a variety of owners. By the late 1900s, its history had fallen into obscurity, and it was considered to be just another home on its block. But, when new owners arrived in 2006 and began renovating, strange activity started manifesting. The owners opened the home to ghost hunters for the first time a few years later, and interest quickly snowballed. It soon opened to the public under a brand-new title: Whispers Estate.
2026
Over the next twenty years, Whispers Estate grew into a Midwestern phenomenon. Now, visitors and staff document countless instances of paranormal activity, from spirits both new and old. Ghost hunters descend on the property almost every weekend to record evidence of these encounters. Through these visits, and the home’s expanding list of ghost stories, Whispers is becoming one of Indiana’s most popular haunted hotspots.
Is Whispers Estate Haunted?
Every ghost story has to start somewhere. And, as its name suggests, Whispers Estate’s reports began with a whisper. Or rather, many whispers.
Some of the earliest claims of ghostly activity in the home focused on disembodied voices. Specters seemed to live in the walls, constantly whispering and chatting amongst themselves. And if anyone paused and listened, they could hear the ghosts speaking.
Rachel’s Ghostly Entity
One of the first spirits identified in Whispers Estate was ‘Rachel,’ a young girl’s ghost. Rachel is said to be the spirit of an orphan adopted by John and Jessie Gibbons.
The story goes that Rachel met a grisly end after getting too close to a fireplace and burning to death. As a result, her ghost remains entombed in Whispers Estate.
Strange Sounds & Uncertain Voices
Rachel’s story was popularized in Whispers Estate’s early years thanks to reports of her voice floating in the home’s foyer. There, many visitors claimed to hear Rachel’s soft singing. Her voice was so clear, most people could hear it without a microphone or recorder.
But as more reports of activity around the house flourished, Rachel’s singing came under further scrutiny.
A skeptical researcher named Kenny Biddle led an exploration of the building in the 2010s. During the search, Kenny uncovered a hidden speaker beneath the floor, a likely culprit for the foyer’s phantom singing.
Since the speaker was removed, reports of the singing fell by the wayside. But while Rachel’s songs may have been smoke and mirrors, many investigators still report her apparition roaming around.
Phantoms Frolic In The Halls
A little girl’s apparition often frolics through Whispers Estate. While many ghost hunters figure this is also the ghost of Rachel, no one can be sure. The girl’s ghost seems more interested in playing than communicating.
Visitors who bring in dolls and other toys frequently note the items moving by themselves. Along with that, a small child’s footsteps are sometimes heard running through the upstairs halls. But if this is Rachel’s ghost, she’s not the only playful spirit calling Whispers Estate home.
The Estate’s Child Entities
Several other child spirits may roam through Whispers Estate. Some ghost hunters report a young boy’s figure in the house. Supposed psychics and sensitives have also picked up the energy of a young boy.
But this boy’s ghost is even more elusive than Rachel’s. No one has been able to positively identify him yet.
Aside from the phantom youngsters, at least one infant spirit is said to reside at Whispers. An upstairs bedroom is notorious for scents of baby powder that will appear and disappear in an instant. The same room is also well known for disembodied baby cries in the middle of the night.
Lore suggests this is a spirit of another adopted child of John and Jessie Gibbons, though this cannot be verified.
A House of Shifting Shadows
Whispers Estate isn’t just a depository of Indiana’s orphaned ghosts. Numerous other unknown entities are reported around the house, and one may not even be human. A strange, blob-like apparition called the ‘Big Black’ is said to lurk around Whispers Estate.
The Big Black has no human features and cannot be communicated with. But many visitors report chilling encounters with it. They often see it crawling or sliding across floors, though some witnesses say it will appear suddenly on walls and ceilings as well.
A Paranormal Portal
The history of Whispers Estate lends itself to hauntings well enough. But some researchers say there’s more than just history making the home haunted.
Psychics and ghost hunters report that a portal of some kind may exist in Whispers Estate, allowing entities of all kinds to come and go at will. Portals are essentially impossible to trace or verify. But the portal at Whispers purportedly always causes the same activity to occur.
The spectral portal is said to be the source of negative spirits that visitors encounter in the home. Some guests and ghost hunters get shoved or have their hair tugged, while others get scratched, kicked, or punched by unseen forces.
Most witnesses pin these assaults on unknown ghosts from the portal. Others figure the portal is the source of the ‘Big Black’ as well.
The Ghostly Gibbons Family
A lot of activity at Whispers Estate is overshadowed by playful child spirits and terrifying unknowns. Though the building has subtler claims as well. And these reports may be from the energies of John and Jessie Gibbons. Door handles around the house will rattle, most often at the door to the master bedroom, where Jessie Gibbons died.
Dr. Gibbons himself may still be keeping up his home practice as well. Near his old office, visitors hear a man’s voice whispering in their ear. They might also feel invasive touches from unseen hands. Maybe Dr. Gibbons is just offering a free check up?
Ghost Hunters Uncover Oddities
Through numerous visits from ghost hunting teams, many other reports of strange activity have come out of Whispers Estate. Ghost hunters note strange EMF levels and spikes near the home’s purported haunted hotspots. Strange whispers are also still recorded throughout the house. But now, those soft whispers are joined by phantom growls, pained cries, and loud laughs.
Along with collecting these voices and sounds on digital recordings, ghost hunters also report success with certain ITC tools. Growls, laughs, and cries purportedly manifest often through Spirit Boxes and Ovilus devices used in the house.
Whispers Estate’s Enduring Legend
Few homes anywhere in Indiana are as rife with ghost stories as Whispers Estate. The home looks no different than any other on its quiet small-town block. But its curious history and long list of paranormal claims make it one of the most remarkably odd homes in the entire Midwest.
Private ghost hunts are the primary offering at Whispers Estate. For those not willing to spend a night in such a spooky house, day tours may soon be offered as well.
All the revenue from ghost hunts and tours goes back into maintaining the historic home. Whispers Estate also accepts financial donations to support the home’s preservation. Additionally, the estate accepts cat food to support the neighborhood’s phantom-loving felines.
Whispers Estate spent many years as a happy home, and a busy doctor’s office. A place to experience the warmth of life. But these days, it’s the perfect place to hear the spine-chilling voices of the dead, even if they’re only whispers.
